The Gozo tunnel project has been a hot topic of debate over several years in Malta, with recent mention of a possible referendum taking place to once-and-for-all see whether Gozitans would agree with the project in physically linking Malta and Gozo. 

This referendum however is not set in stone, with more information necessary to place judgment on the actual project, we should in turn consider the benefits and consequences of the connecting tunnel for travelers. 

The tunnel's primary objective is to ease the lives of people who regularly travel from Gozo to Malta, and vise versa. Allowing for an active route with all necessary updated measures of safety would create more opportunity for various active travelers such as kickscooter riders and cyclists can be encouraged to make the trip instead of riding the former ferry service. This also includes the ability to travel at any time, without being tied to the ferry's timetable, allowing for more freedom to plan your route and day.

However we should also consider whether the existing and recently upgraded ferry services from various points in Malta to Gozo will be necessary after the project is complete. As the tunnel would be available for travelling through it, would it also cater to pedestrians or only drivers? 
If the tunnel does not cater to pedestrians, in that case the ferry services would remain the sole and safest way for traversing between the islands, leading to more vehicles entering and exiting Gozo. Gozo has managed to retain much of it's natural and unobstructed beauty in the recent years of the architectural boom in Malta, so it leaves to wonder whether the tunnel would promote more people, businesses and construction to the island in the future?
