Marsascala Public Spaces project detested by public, promoted by Government

The Marsascala project proposed by Transport Malta is an initiative to redesign the coastal area into a yacht marina. This project has also been identified as being on stand-by since 2006, with latest action being taken to realize it. marsascala.jpg

The Local Council of the area has since been vocal about this project, stating that necessary dialogue and discussion with locals should take place prior to any action as this can alter many people's quality of life in the area, as well as the beach and swimming zones becoming polluted by boats and the dangers accompanying a high commute of boats.

The Mayor of Marsascala, Mario Calleja has stated that he disagrees with the proposal and that it would not benefit residents, mentioning that TM did not consider the effects on them in their proposal and the long-term environmental strains it will pose. This issue is beyond a political matter, where the livelihood of many would be affected by this and also the area's natural marine life can be further degraded from such actions, as well as the loss of the iconic Marsascala Bay.

Such actions are quite drastic when considering our depleting natural area and resources, especially with our record breaking tourist visits rising annually (excluding Coronavirus breaks), which further strains the limited beaches we have left. Other issues like private owned deck chair rentals taking up good proportions of beaches, and over crowding issues, we should aim to protect as opposed to destroy what limited space is left.
