The road leading from Attard to Haz-Zebbug, beside the Buqqana roundabout has had a vacant lot of land on one of it's arterial roads, which has caught the attention of Lidl development team who had proposed a plan for a Lidl supermarket and adequate parking arrangements. However the initial proposal was denied, leading to a reshaping of the project to decrease the area of ODZ land. This within itself is a questionable proposition, given the area is ODZ land to begin with.
However, the latest plans which received the 'Go Ahead' from the Planning Authority includes a construction of the Lidl complex, alongside a 252 ground-level car park. A question arises, being why would the Lidl development not enforce underground parking below the structure in an attempt to save even more ODZ land? Well the current plans state that below the Lidl building, there will be two basement levels, one for another sectional parking as well as a floor designated for timber processing. Timber processing is the means of taking raw wood and transforming it into usable panels, which is relatively questionable for a Lidl to include in it's plans.
However, a pleasant restoration project of a nearby Windmill 'il-Mitħna ta’ Srina' will be included in the project. Further assessment of the project also states that the Traffic impact Assessment by Transport Malta is satisfied with the plans.
Since the coverage of this project was released to the public, there have been various mixed emotions on this development. While it is undeniable that alongside this project already exists another relatively large supermarket building, allowing for healthy competition to take place in this area, yet also being viewed as an unnecessary placement in an area that never requested this project.
